Nottingham Chan Buddhism Group
Chinese Zen Meditation
We are a small group of mixed experience, welcoming new members of any level. We meet regularly on Tuesday evenings in the centre of Nottingham for sitting and walking meditation and discussion. Meetings are led by Hilary Richards.
The main focus of the group is Chan (Chinese Zen Buddhism) as practiced by the Western Chan Fellowship, but we are an open group and so membership and discussions may encompass other traditions. There is no need to be a Buddhist to come along. If you would like to meditate with us you are welcome to join us.
Time: 7.30 - 9.45pm
Place Thesophical Lodge on Maid Marion Way.
Nottingham NG1 6AJ
The lodge is next door to the Salutation Inn.
If you have a mat, cushion or meditation bench, it is recommended that you bring it, as we have only a limited supply. Chairs will be available if required.
A donation towards the cost of hiring the room is welcomed.
Please arrive in good time, especially if it's your first time at the group. The schedule of a typical evening is as follows.
- 7:15 PM - Arrive
- 7:30 - Read the liturgy
- 7:40 - Sitting Meditation (Zazen)
- 8:20 - Slow Walking Mediation
- 8:30 - Sitting Meditation
- 9:10 - Tea and Discussion.
- 9:45 - Finish
We have a discussion over a cup of tea at the end of the evening. Previous topics have included Aspirational Prayer of the Western Chan Fellowship. This prayer is intended as an aid to mindfulness and is an introduction to the Buddhist precepts.
Our next day retreat will be in the Autumn 2008
The day retreat is intended to provide an extended period of practice, spending the day in silence, and including several sessions of meditation. Some teaching, chanting and gentle exercises may be included, but in general the day is quite simple. It is suitable for beginners and those who already have experience of meditation. If we have your email address we will notify you when the date is confirmed. Further details will be posted here when we have them.
